Platform design
Two to three days in which a platform is designed in detail. Platforms organise exchange between several sides. Whether that succeeds is decided by the transactions: who exchanges with whom, about what, and what everyone involved gets out of it.
Key facts
- 4-8 people
- 2-3 days
- Decision makers & practitioners
- Designing transactions, roles and channels
How the days unfold
We start with the ecosystem: the existing one that can be mobilised, or one that does not yet exist. We then identify the most important transactions and make sure the platform has a channel for each of them. Finally we shape the experiences and transaction values of those involved. An existing project can be examined for gaps and possible changes of course along the way.
What you take away
A strategy document that makes the platform’s viability testable, plus a mentoring phase for delivery.
Strategy or design?
The two platform workshops share their foundations and answer different questions. Strategy settles whether and on what a platform can stand: business model, launch, network effects. Design shapes the inner workings: transactions, roles and channels. If the fundamental question is open, start with strategy. Once it is settled, design takes you further.
Who the days are meant for
For founders and managers as much as for public administration, for community managers of platforms, incubators or coworking spaces, and for social entrepreneurs. There should be no more than eight people.
Who the workshop is not for
If it is still open whether a platform can stand at all, start with platform strategy: design presumes that decision.
